Menstrual cups like the DIVA Cup are not one size fits all. Did you know that the DIVA Cup comes in three sizes? Below, our menstrual cup size guide will shed some light on how to choose which DIVA Cup is right for you.
Consider our size guidelines as a recommendation, because let’s face it—we all come in different shapes and sizes. We use characteristics such as age, flow, and cervix height to help you select a size. But what does it all mean?
Age is just a number and 40 is the new 30, but when it comes to DIVA Cup sizing, age matters. As we age, our bodies go through physiological changes even if we still feel like we’re in our 20s. These changes can be somewhat minimal, but a shift in hormones may lead to weaker pelvic floor muscles. Your body shape will also change as you age, and your hips can become wider. Although there is only 1/8” (~0.3 cm) of a difference between our different models, choosing the right size is important. Age should definitely be taken into consideration.
One important thing to note is that using a menstrual cup has nothing to do with a person’s virginity. You can learn more about it here. However, whether you’ve had vaginal intercourse could affect sizing if you’re in your 20s or 30s. If you haven’t had vaginal intercourse, you may prefer a Model 0.
Whether you’re a professional couch potato (you do you boo, we’re not judging) or an Olympic weightlifter, your fitness level can certainly affect sizing. Most often, exercises that involve the core muscles often result in a stronger pelvic floor as well. Keep in mind that for some that do inverse yoga poses or powerlifting, it is possible for the muscles to tense enough that it breaks the seal of your DIVA Cup, which could result in leaking. This is very rare but something to consider.
Everyone’s birthing experience is quite unique and can involve a lot of changes to the body. It’s important to remember that it takes time to recuperate after giving birth. The journey of parenthood involves a lot of unknown territory and you’re doing a good job. Whether you’ve given birth via C-section (You are so strong!), vaginally after 24 hours of labor (You are amazing!), the strength of your pelvic floor muscles may have been affected. Maybe your pelvic floor muscles are really tight, or they may need a bit of strengthening.
It’s always best to get assessed by a pelvic health physiotherapist so that they can provide insight and assist you with your recovery. For some, it may take up to a year for the body to fully recover. But please know that leaking urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing, or running should not be accepted as the norm after giving birth. Another thing to consider is the age at which you gave birth. Physical recovery from pregnancy in your 20s might be quicker.
When it comes to choosing your DIVA Cup size, it’s important to note that all 3 of our model sizes are about the same length. Both Model 1 and Model 2 are 66 mm long and the Model 0 is 65 mm. For those with a lower cervix, this can mean that the DIVA Cup may sit closer to the cervix compared to those with a higher cervix. Want to learn more about your cervix and the DIVA Cup? When it comes to choosing your DIVA Cup size, flow really does matter when you’re choosing between Model 0 and Model 1. Keep in mind that Model 0 can hold up to 22ml of flow; Model 1 can hold up to 25ml; Model 2 can hold up to 30ml. This means that if you are using the Model 1 and have a heavy flow, you may need to empty your cup sooner than the 12hr maximum wear time or switch to Model 2. Now you may want to speak to your doctor if you find that you’re emptying your Model 2 more than three times per day. The entire, average monthly flow is approximately 1 to 2 ounces (30-60 ml). How does this all tie-in, you ask?
Well, if you’re 18, have a heavy flow, and are sexually active, then a Model 1 may be the correct size for you. You’re 34, have given birth in your 20s and do CrossFit 4-5 times a week, Model 1 may also be the right size for you.
