Gender Inclusive Periods: “Menstruation Situation” by Clae Lu

As part of Diva's BIPOC Creator Fund, illustrator Clae Lu created a comic series that spotlights their experience with and relationship to menstruation. From teaching us the basics about gender inclusive periods, to a more personal look at how Clae thinks of their own period, the entire "Menstruation Situation" series is a delightful and important reminder that all bodies do incredible things.

Hi, my name is Clae and I'm a trans non-binary illustrator, designer, 古筝 musician, and cultural worker. I was assigned female at birth, but I realized later that I don't identify with that gender identity. Menstruating doesn't personally affect my gender identity, but it's still troublesome! All kinds of people can menstruate, it doesn't matter what gender identity they have. So not all women menstruate and not all menstruators are women!

During the panini* (*COVID-19 pandemic) I gave menstrual cups a go (me, a trans non-binary person). It's been a bit of a learning curve, but it's created a nice space and ritual to get to know my body a bit better. There are all kinds of menstrual cups and it's been fun exploring all kinds of designs. There are so many ways to fold them! While getting to know my cycle better, a big added bonus is the lack of waste, even for just one cycle!

Hi! My name is Clae and I'm a trans non-binary illustrator, designer, 古筝 musician and cultural worker who happens to menstruate. Some days when I'm menstruating, I can still do things like bouldering. Most days, I'm reminded to slow down, take care of my physical body... and be grateful for all the incredible things my trans body is capable of!
